Hello.
I know it's very ignorant of me, but what information would be recorded in parish registers for marriages in early 19th century? I specifically need the father of the bride! Don't want to go on a hunt if it will be of no avail.
If anyone is interested, or fancies a challenge, the bride in question is Catharine Yardley who married Joseph Wilson in 1816 in the area of Solihull. I know she was born in Tanworth Warwickshire around 1790. Unfortunately there are 2 Catharine Yardleys, both born in Tanworth in 1788 and 1791!! Hence my wish to find out which one she is.

(All the above info is from family search and 1851 census).

Any help/suggestions much appreciated. Thanks folks!!

Fathers names were not included until civil registration began in 1837.

All you will get is the name of bride, groom and witnesses, whether they were of the parish or not and possibly (but not always) marital status and grooms occupation.

Hi Jan,

Have you tried Freereg as the have a lot of church records from down that way.

I find it is easy to work out who is the father /mother by find about 4 children to them and looking for matches in the daughters childrens names, as there is always a pattern they usually named them after the grandparents / siblings in those days.

Good Luck - Lou

Thanks Lou.

When I try freereg I get on the ancestry site! Am I doing something wrong?

Your suggestion about finding parents is a good one, and I will use it elsewhere or to find siblings. My problem is sorting out the 2 Catharines!! I think I've made it a bit confusing so here is what I have:

Births:
1. Catharine Yardley christened Tanworth 1788 parents Job and Mary
2. Catharine Yardley christened Tanworth 1791 parents Joseph and Sarah ( Palmer).

Marriages:
1. Catherine Yardley to William Luckman Tanworth 1811
2. Catharine Yardley to Joseph Wilson Tanworth 1816.

There is no way to sort out which records are about the same Catharine as far as I can see. So I can't go any further back on the maternal side unless I can confirm that "my" Catharine was born to Sarah Palmer. I need ideas about where to go from here!

Probably even more confusing!

Thanks again for replies.

Best wishes

Jan

you are probably entering in the box at the top of the screen where it says "Enter your Ancestor's Name Here" - that is an advertisement for Ancestry!

To search on freereg click on "Search Parish Registers". It is a good idea to check if the area you are interested in is covered - click on Counties and Parishes.

Hi Jan, there are a couple of wills on the National Archives site which may help you. I can't see a will for Job Yardley, but there are two for Joseph Yardleys of Tanworth, one in 1818 and one in 1829.

If you're lucky, one of them will mention "my dear wife Sarah" and "my daughter Catherine Luckman" or whatever, so you know which father she belongs to.

You can download each one for £3.50.

Hi Derek,

I'm really surprised to hear that - I don't think I've ever seen parents' names in a pre-1837 marriage register, although I've transcribed records from parishes in several different counties (not Derbyshire, though).

Thanks "Potty", you guessed what I was doing!
Here I go again.
Mary - thanks for your efforts, what a brilliant suggestion. I see what you mean - if Joseph mentions either Catharine Luckman or Wilson I have her! Maybe a bit hopeful, but it's the best idea I've found, so many thanks. Wish me luck!
Best wishes

Just in case anyone is still out there - my mystery is solved! The will was the key, but as it happens I have found someone else who has already obtained it! What a stroke of luck. Jennifer has very kindly shared the information it contains which has clarified everything. It was actually the will of the two Catharines' grandfather, which is probably better as it has details of their respective fathers which is what I needed.
Mary, I have to thank you as even if I hadn't found Jennifer I would have eventually sent for the will and sorted it out. I shall always use this as a line of research from now on.
Many thanks
