Could anyone on here please help me sort something out?
Just received my mothers BM &D certificates and her mother (my grandmother) is causing problems.
On her birth cert her name is King
On the marriage certificate it is Porter.
Her father is as follows:
On her birth certificate it is Colin Stevens
On her marriage cerificate he is deceased.
I always knew my grandmother as Porter, but my grandfather is EA Edwards. They clearly weren't married.
I assume from this that after her 1st husband died she remarried and became Porter. I do not know whether 2nd husband died or they seperated, and went on to live with Edwards.
I think she would of been born around the turn of the century. Can't find her in census and would cost a fortune to search all kings and stevens over long period. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can sort this to trace her please? There are no family members to ask. Thank you. Jenny

You're welcome.

A little more info for you. Edwin King Married Annie Tripp
Year of Registration: 1890
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Croydon
County: Greater London, Kent, Surrey
Volume: 2a
Page: 432

Annie's Parents were Fanny & Lewis

I think Amy Tripp in the 1901 census is Annies daughter. There is a birth registered for a Florences Amy Tripp in 1882 & a Marriage for an Amy Florence Tripp in 1903 both in Croydon.

Chrisa....Thank you so much for this further information. It is so kind of you to give your time to help me. Could I ask you one more question? Now that I have my grandmother marriage ref, is it easy to go forwards as well. To find my mothers siblings if she had any and cousins who could still be living or does it not work?

chrisa

chrisa Report 1 Dec 2008 18:52

You're welcome Jenny.

If you go to free bmd
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Click to search births.
Put in Stevens in the surname box then King in mothers maiden name box. Put the years you want to search in ( say 1915 - 1930 ) You can also select the district you want.

You will get some possible siblings but you would have to buy the certs to be sure they were your mothers siblings. It looks like there may be three possible older siblings

If you need any more help just let me know. x

Thank you again, just thought of another question, if you wouldn't mind :-) If my grandmother remarried, which I think she did, would you search using her maiden name or her married name or both!!

chrisa

chrisa Report 1 Dec 2008 18:59

Just to add Jenny it is possible to find possible children of your mothers siblings but it takes a long trawl through Marriages & Births & it's best if you have a subscription to Ancestry or Find my past as you have to look through page by page.

chrisa

chrisa Report 1 Dec 2008 19:01

The best way to go about that would be to first find when her first husband died. You can then start looking through the full indexes for a marriage. If it was me I would search using the name Stevens. x

Jenny Report 1 Dec 2008 19:03

Ok I understand, thanks. I know have more information so now I feel I know where to begin.....I come back in a few days and let you know how I get on. I will look at a subscription because I think as I know so little, there is no avoiding that.

Hi Chrisa, Just to let you know that thanks to your help I have now traced my grandmothers 4 children(my mum and her three sisters) and found her second marriage which is the Porter name. All from the free bdm site. You are a star thank you.

Jenny Report 2 Dec 2008 18:53

Hi again, wondered what your opinion was on this? Only just noticed.
I have a copy of my mothers marriage cert and her father is down as Colin Stevens deceased. this was 1949.
The marriage between my grandmother and her second husband Edward Porter is registered in Sept 1927.
My mother wasn't born until 1929???
Do you think there is a mistake somewhere? Doesn't make sense?
