Oh dear looks like there's not much chance for me then! I have no idea what regiment he would have been in!

I also imagine he would have been discharged after 1854 as he was only born in 1841.

Thanks for the help though!

Only those discharged to pension up to 1854 are name indexed on the National Archives catalogue. If it was after this, you'd have to go to Kew or get someone to go for you. Problem is, if he was discharged before 1872, you'd need to know his regiment to find his records. There's a 3 year project, though, to put them all online, if you can wait that long!

Yes his marriage was in Q2 1865 in St Pancras. Would that mean that the documents relating to his pension would be dated before this i.e. his date of discharge?

But you know he was out by1869 ,have you found him on the 1861 or his marriage ,this would give some sort of time span

Thanks Shirley,

Do you just write to the National Archives and ask for them to search for you, and is there a charge?

Yes he is listed on my GG grandfather's birth cert as a Chelsea Pensioner in 1869.

there were IN pensioners and OUT pensioners. Out pensioners were those that came out of the Army on a pension and didnt reside in the Chelsea Hospital .
You could try the National Archives site for his Army papers as lots were kept if they had a pension. Got my grt x 4 grandfathers records from there he was an OUT Chelsea pensioner having served from 1822 -1849 and was medically discharged.
Have assumed your ancester was in the 1800-1900,s
