My Dad worked in Custom House, the area as opposed to the actual Custom House. He actually worked in the Albert Dock.

There is an article on Wikipedia about the area.

Thank you all for your replies - I had thought maybe if she was on the barge later in life that maybe it was a family thing and she was born there - unfortunately I don't know her maiden name so am a bit stuck at the moment. C'est la vie!

I have a census report that says my Gt Grand Mother was born in Customs House, London. As far as I can see Customs House was then, and still is (although there is a new one) for duties and taxes of goods through the docks. Can any one tell me if anyone lived there at all (around 1880). Family anecdotes say that my GGM worked on a barge early 1900's - does anyone know if that was a thing generally done by women - and if this ties in with the Customs House thing. Any info gratefully received !
