Hi Linda,

there will still be a record of the burial even if the child was stillborn. I was in a similar situation to your friend and a kind lady on this board pointed that out to me. So after 45 years I was able to find out where my sister was buried. All I did was email the burials department of the council where the birth took place and a very kind man looked it up for me and sent me all the details ie: the date of the burial which my parents never knew, the plot number of the grave and a map of the cemetery so that I can visit. He even offered to take me and show me the grave himself and to show me the original record if I let him know in advance when I would be visiting. It really is worth sending an email. Good luck to your friend.

You are welcome, sharing info is what makes this place work!

Its a very touchy subject to bring up with family, I know Mum never asked her mum because she felt it would upset her, right now she wants to know if what she remembers is correct, but its so close to Nanas anniversary (we lost her in January of this year) so we have decided to wait a little while and then find out when we are feeling stronger about it.

Just out of curiosity, you said that you knew the name of the undertaker, and aprox date of the babys birth?
Have you tried seeing if the local cemetery has records online?
Manchester does & I have seen a lot of stillborn or very young childrens burials listed, try under the name, or just the surname, or 'Child of xxxx' or even 'Stillborn child of xxxx' it MAY come up in the records ............... just a word of warning before you do tho, a lot of these are in communal graves, so be prepared for that to be a possibility, you need to work out wether that would upset your friend to know that before you go looking.

Linda,
I enquired about something similar on my mums behalf here a while back.

Stillbirths are reagiestered as a birth & death record in a sealed record, only the parents or proven next of kin in the case of both parents being now dead can request a copy of the certificate.

If the child lived for even a day it would have a birth & death certificate as only stillborn babies are registered as above.

The definition a friend who is a Dr gave me of the difference between a stillborn child & a newborn who does after birth is "If the child has taken independant breath" it is deemed being a live birth, if it died during or before birth and never took a breath its a stillbirth.

The thread with the info on it I was given is here:

If you want to take a read at the replies, it may help you .

This is for a friend if anyone could help:
She has discovered she had a sister who died within a day of being born or maybe even stillborn. The baby apparently was buried in the coffin of a lady who had died. She would like to find out more but doesn't know how/where, can anybody point her in the right direction please.
She has the following information:
Name (but doesn't think the birth was registered ).
Date: Approx. 1965/66
Parents names.
Born: Woolwich Hospital for Mothers & Babies.
Death: Apparently was registered but I have been unable to find anything on Ancestry.
Funeral: She knows the undertakers who carried out the burial.

Thank you.
