Not wanting to be a wet blanket but he could have been born anywhere. Maybe he married and settled in that area because that's where his wife was from, or where he moved to whilst looking for work ...

You could start with a list of all possibles - and perhaps narrow down a few by obvious deaths etc, checking other people's trees - on here and Ancestry say.

Do the witnesses on his marriage cert give any clues? A sibling maybe?

Paul,

What about Herbert's occuaption or any siblings?

Otherwise, it's the 1911 census like the rest of us.

Thanks everybody for your help.
I'm still really none the wiser ......
I have found a Herbert William born 1885 in Newcastle Under Lime and then a William Bennett in 1903 also in Newcastle Under Lime. Could I be on the right track I wonder?
Does any one know how to narrow down farther without buying loads of certificates???????

If you know when he died and it was after 1969 his date of birth will be on the death ref.

You can try searching Freebmd for an entry on the name and seeing if there is a registration match for the area in married in, also check his residence on the marriage. There are 5 William Henry's registered in Staffs between 1902 and 1905, but none in burton.

Have you searched the 1901 for his father to see where he lived, which may help to narrow the search area on Freebmd. Did he have older siblings as this may help the 1901 census search. There are 22 Herberts in 1901 census in Staffordshire and some in Burton.

Also try parish register for baptisn to narrow search.

If you know the year but do not know the place of birth of an individual what other means can be used to locate a birth record?
My Grandfather was born 1903/04 (before May) so after the 1901 census, named William Henry Bennett.
His father was Herbert........that's all I have, can anyone help with a date of birth?
William lived and married in Burton, Staffs at 28.
