Ships' Names - The Beagle

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Obviously we all know The Beagle as the ship on which Charles Darwin voyaged round the world while he was writing his Origin of Species, but I have found that one of my ancestors was Chief Mate on a ship called Beagle in 1881. Do you think this would be the same ship, or could a number of boats been called the same thing?

The guy's name is Samuel Decent Stockman, born 1857 in Brixham, Devon.

Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 459; Folio: 100; Page: -8; Line: ; GSU roll: 1341100.

Any ideas?

Ah ha! Thanks, Eric.

If Darwin's Beagle was scrapped in 1870, then this can't be the same ship.

Oh well!

Many thanks for your help.

The RN seem to use the same ship's name over and over again. Once one has been decommissioned it seems to free up that name for re-use.

I vaguely remember an article I read about it once which explained how they chose names for particular types of ships (but that was many years ago now).

I don't think 'Chief Mate' is a Royal Navy rank, so it won't be a warship. It will probably be in Lloyd's List but I don't know where you'd access that other than the National Archives.

If you have Ancestry and bring up the image of the census page, if you click on the District No at the top of the screen this will bring up a list of vessels, click on the relevant one and the image that comes up will give you more details about the ship and tell you where it was on the night of the census.

(I think I have got these instructions right, but as I no longer have an Ancestry subscription I can check)

have checked the 1881 census this is not a royal navy ship (doesn't say hms or royal navy) and as it only has a crew of three it could be anything from a yacht to a barge

THERE'S NO WAY THIS WAS A ROYAL NAVY SHIP!!!!
