Many thanks for the suggestions. I have looked on London Gazette but can't find anything. I do have the added problem that the name "Youd" seems to look for any words with "you" and "d" which, as you can imagine, elongates my search results somewhat!

I dont think I have an Ernest Youd in my tree although a fair few hundred Youd's hail from the Frodsham/Helsby area. Many thanks for the offer though. I will check with the other Youd tree researchers and see if their branches follow down to Ernest and will come back to you Alan if I needed. Thank you again for the offer.

Regards

Alan

Sally,
I had a look at Ancestry Military but couldnt find anymore about William. I did find an Ernest Percy Youd whose parents were John/Helen living in Helsby which is next town along the A56. I also think that Frodsham was where the Enlistment Office was located. Perhaps this is a relation? If it is, send me a pm and I'll supply more info.

Go to gazettes-online .co.uk-the London gazette archive is indexed and you can search by name for those mentioned in dispatches-Best of luck

Hello, thanks for that. Fortuitously I did manage to get William H Youd's medal card from Ancestry last month when it was free to view.

I have done a long search through National Archives for William H Youd but can't find anything re despatches.

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920
about William H Youd
Name: William H Youd
Regiment or Corps: Royal Engineers
Regimental number: 30231

There may be something on nationalarchives.

I wonder if anyone can help? Apart from visiting Kew (250 miles away!) is there any way of finding out if family rumours are true that two of my ancesters were mentioned in despatches.

WWI - My Grandfather William Holland Youd from Frodsham, Cheshire. Motor Cyclist Corporal in Royal Engineers. Regimental number 30231. He was wounded in France but recuperated and was then sent out to Egypt.

WWII - my Great Uncle, Edwin James Matthews. Corporal in the Kings Regiment (Liverpool) - though I'm told he was a war correspondence working for the Intelligence Corps. Service No 3777472. Died 09/06/1944 Normandy. Buried at Hermanville.

I would be grateful for any advice. Many thanks
