Thank you for the help. The Fell/Hamer connection does look optimistic. I have sent off for a couple of certificates and will take it from there. It's so addictive, I'm not getting anything else done!

Kathryn, you really do need to buy certificates to ensure you are following the right line.

If you bought one of the kids birth certs then you would have the mothers maiden name - from there you can track down the marriage and buy that cert for both fathers names and occupations and LOTs of other clues. Then you work backwards.

Here's a birth on the IGI [www.familysearch.org] which doesn't match exactly but could be a possibility:

Christening:
17 JUL 1829 Preston, Lancashire, England

Parents:
Father: William Fell
Mother: Alice

Krissie

Forget that one, I've found a much better one:

JOSEPH HAMER OR FELL
Male

Birth: 09 AUG 1827
Christening: 04 NOV 1827 Saint John, Bury, Lancashire,

Parents:
Father: JOHN HAMER
Mother: MARIA FELL

Maybe the parents weren't married, hence the 2 surnames.

Thank you Linda.

Joseph Fell (Hamer) was born in 1828, Summerseat, Lancashire.
He married Elizabeth (no maiden name or date)
Children; Robert, Alfred, Hubert/James, Joseph

The 1841 data shows him as a 13yr old living with William and Mary Fell and siblings Mary. Alice and Thomas. At least I think it's him.

Interesting to see that in the later census he sometimes is referrd to as Hamer or Fell. His descendants went on to be Hamers. The family was/is based in Bury Lancashire.

You can only go further back by using parish records. Some are on line on the IGi
www.familysearch.org

|Other counties have dedicated websites.
Post the 1841 census details on here and we can help you look, or at least point you to specific websites if you prefer to do it yourself

I'm new to this and have managed to trace back my paternal family to my great, great grandad born in 1828 but have now hit a brick wall. I can find Joseph Fell (sometimes known as Hamer) as a child in 1841 census his father maybe William Fell (1806).

How do I now go further?
