If you ever get hold of the book again, try looking on the 1851 census for some of the missing 705. My guess is they'll turn up on adjacent pieces.

Is it White's Directory from 1848?

I'm guessing the parish boundaries cover other hamlets in the book, whereas they have a separate listing in the census.

The book was loaned to me some 20 years ago and I have forgotten it`s name or who the author was. I will try to speak to the man who let me borrow it and see if he still has it.

Does the book cover a larger geographical area than the census.
Where did the number of inhabitants mentioned in the book come from? it may not even be accurate maybe authors artistic licence?

Hi Col,

Yes, I would agree that would be an explanation for some of the villagers being away from home on that night, but 50% missing!!!!!!!

Working away from home, in the armed services, in prison - the list of reasons why residents may not be at home on the evening of the census is lengthy

I was loaned a book that was dated approx 1850 about Essex villages. It gave descriptions of villages, prominent inhabitants, the types of shops, names of farms, extent of the village and the number of inhabitants.

Now.......I was interested in the village of Southminster so I logged onto the 1851 census and pulled up the whole of census. Many of the names on this census, ie. the name of the vicar, the surgeon, farmers etc. agree with the book information. But, the thing that is causing me some concern is.....the census has 739 inhabitants but the book gives 1,444.

Where are the other 705?

Your thoughts would be most welcome.
