Thanks Cynthia, yes, in the press and in a book about war time London - a few photos of her too. The archivist at southwark has been very kind and sent me other stuff of citations from the War Committee and so on.

Chris - I cant imagine my Nan ever being like that - may be thats why she didnt marry til she was 30 :) - took her time choosing the right bloke. Sadly he died only 10 years after they married.

Heather

Thank you for the posting as I am sure there will be women who chose not to be entered due to their principles.

As for mine....

They are all there and as I would have suspected!

Probably because, as my Dad so eloquently put it, the wives were kept...."Barefoot, Pregnant and in the Kitchen" !!!!

I have been having a rare old time looking up on the census and found it worked better just putting in the surname and then an approx area if the results were too many to display.
Have quickly spent £24.95 on transcripts and census pages but have found loads on both sides of the family including MUM & Dad with their respective families and also confirmed one of OH maternal family told HUGE Porkies about her age!!

You've got to admire your Nan Heather haven't you? She sounds a fantastic person. Was she ever mentioned in the press, especially for her bravery exploits?

I believe all in all there are a MILLION records missing.

I reiterate that many will be mistranscribed or missing - this thread was to alert people to the fact that if a woman is not with her family on the census, where she is normally and cannot be found anywhere, it is POSSIBLE she may have refused to enter census detail due to her beliefs.

Some notes re women refusing to enter info in the 1911 :

Another - who has partially completed the form – declares:

'If I am intelligent enough to fill in this paper, I am intelligent enough to put a cross on a voting paper.'

She also lists '6 females - addresses and names unknown' who, we can guess, were fellow suffragettes.

Many attended all-night parties or stayed with friends to avoid participation.

I've just searched for 4 different families, all were living in London at the time of the 1911 census. I cannot find a single one of them.
I guess I'm doing something wrong because I can't believe that all 34 of them got missed off the census!!!!!!!
Or were they all overseas on a family jolly at the time!! LOL

But thanks for the information Heather, because I didn't know that about the Suffragettes.

No, there are only 2 in the whole of London, neither of which are her and she should have been at home with her family - mum, dad, bros etc. but isnt. (she was the accountant for her fathers business and lived on the premises with them) She was still living there at the age of 30 when she married.

I thought Id mention it in case any other women arent where they are expected to be on that night.

She may have been mistranscribed.

I pulled up a list of Mococks for my One Name Study. There were only two pages of them in London and I expected a lot more. I expect they are under the usual assortment of weird and wonderful mistranscriptions!

Ive searched high and low for my gran on the 1911 - she would have been 22 at the time - no sign of her though I found the rest of her family.

Someone pointed out to me that girls who supported the Suffragette movement at that time refused to add their names to the census and in fact held parties or stayed with friends on the night of the census and boycotted it.

My nan was always a feminist - she held down positions which men normally took and was nominated for the George Cross in WW2 for bravery. I am now seriously thinking Nan was one of the protesters and wouldnt complete a census form in protest.

Thought Id mention it in case anyone else has a female member missing.
