In the New Year, I intend to buy another pc, but am confused by various reports that Vista is not worth having. I have been using XP without any problems whatsover, but getting a new pc with XP is a problem.

Members advice pro and against very much appreciated.

Merry Xmas,

I had the same problem, loved XP but any new computer would be likely to be Vista.

In the end I decided that at some point I would have to have a new one and learn to use it, so I did buy one and it's been fine for me.

Different way of using excel and word but I have got used to it now, struggled a bit at first, but then again I always do!

Kind regards
Amanda

We got a new computer last week which has Vista and although some things are slightly different I have managed to get used to it without too much difficulty.

I didn't have to do any of the setting up as my son sees to all the technical stuff, but the change over wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be seeing as how I know very little about computers.

At some point you have to upgrade so it might as well be now!!

Will you end up having to buy all new versions of software or will the old FTM, for example, run OK on vista?

We bought a new laptop back in the summer.

Struggled for 2 months with Vista

Finally decided to get rid of it, so we took it into our local computer geek

It took him 2 weeks to get everything sorted out and working properly .... there was some stuff loaded on there by the manufacturer that they had no idea what it did!

However, what was more interesting was that he had 13 (THIRTEEN) other laptops in the shop at that time waiting to have Vista removed.

Tracy, with regards to programmes, it depends what version you are running as to whether they are Vista compatible or not. I know there is a patch for FTM to enable earlier versions to run on Vista, I am using it!

Bottom line is that we are all going to have to move to Vista at some point so why not do it when buying a new computer?

My son has been using it for over a year now and whilst he did have a few problems with the early versions he tells me that the software is now stable and causes few if any problems. Like all operating systems, make sure you keep everything up to date.

Yes, some things are a little different but once mastered, you wonder what all the fuss was about.

Ive had vista since April on this new puter from Dell (and I would recommend Dell to everyone - its been the best service Ive ever had from a computer company) . I cant say Ive had any problems with Vista?

By the way, you dont need to buy the expensive MS word program, I use the free Open Office download which is completely compatible and FREE.

I use Vista Home premium and have had no trouble once i got used to it. My old photo editing programme (Photosuite 1V) doesn't work well on it but then it is really old. Some of OH's games don't work so well (old ones), most have patches to download. But all in all it is fine. I have FTM 2008 and it is OK.
