Help with FTM

Bilbo,

Thanks so much for that, you are a star! I have edited everything as you instructed and in "kind of relationship" I have put "partner" so when I go back to the family view page instead of marriage it says "meeting" which has made it possible for me to put the address where they were living. (Got that address from my G. Grandmother's Divorce papers! This has been an "Agatha Christie" style investigation and thanks to you I have been able to detail it all into my FTM.

Kathleen you are right you learn something everyday!

Bilbo,

You are quite right - I have used FTM for years and had not noticed the drop down box in the General section of the "edit marriage details" before.

I always say you learn something new every day on Genes - and I'm still learning.

Thank you.

FTM does actually have an option to record some alternative relationships. Proceed as follows:-

1. Link a husband and wife together In Family View, by entering basic details (name, birth date, etc.).

2. In the Marriage date and Marriage place field, enter the marriage date and location.

3. Open the Edit Marriage dialog box to add additional marriage information.

The relationship options can be found on the General Tab - see note below for more info.

Note:-
Marriage fields record the date and location of a couple's marriage. You can also record the status of their relationship in the relationship status field located in the General tab of the Edit Marriage dialog box. For example, if a couple is married, choose Married from the Kind of relationship field.

When you choose Partner or Friend in the Kind of relationship field, Family Tree Maker substitutes "Meeting date" for "Marriage date" in your records. If you merged information from a World Family Tree, some marriage fields may contain the word "Private." This protects the privacy of individuals who are still living.

Thanks Judy and Mary-Jane
I'll certainly look into these options. Especially, because a lot of my rellies seemed to have got themselves into this situation. I'm already hot on the trail of another scoop

Regards
Ann!

I use Legacy and when I add a new partner a box automatically comes up in which to enter marriage details etc. In that box is a drop down menu for married, common law, separated, divorced or unmarried etc etc. If I pick the unmarried option the report says something like Fred had a relationship with Freda. I would be surprised if FTM didnt have something like that.

Actaully, there is a program that will allow you to disdinquish between a wife and a mistress...although they put it in a more politically correct terms. Some of the options, when refering to relationships in the GENOPRO program are, to name just a few:

Cohabitation
Cohabitation and seperation
Non-sentimental cohabitation
Casual relationship or dating (short term)
Love affair
Love affair and seperation
Rape/forced relationship

I use both Genepro and Family Tree Maker (which you can export/import information from one program to the other) for the different reports each progarm offers.

While still married to my G Grandmother, my G Grandfather William Nettleton was having an affair with another woman called Eliza and they had a child. On the birth certificate of this child, William has pretended to be Eliza's legal husband, probably to give the child his name, there never was a marriage between them. My problem is how do I put them into my FTM? Ideally, Eliza would be a partner, but there is no option for this on FTM
