I had one of those. My chap was in Holloway prison - before it became Women Only.

I posted the name/date details on a UK newsgroup (soc.genealogy.britain) and SKS with a subscription to The Times archives looked up the trial for me. Crime - cattle theft.

Since then, the site has had 'free' weeks, and I have discovered that the chap got a second conviction. Luckily for him Transportation to Australia had just been abandoned.

Maybe someone here has a sub. Just ask.

The Records Office probably has the prison records.

My 3x great grandfather was in Gloucestershire gaol and I contacted Gloucester Records Office. I was able to buy a copy of my ancestor's prison record. It was great because it contained a lot of information.

Good luck

I used to live in Portsmouth so I know the prison you are talking about. It is now called Kingston Prison. If you Google Kingston Prison, Portsmouth, and/or Portsmouth Records Office, you might get email addresses and then you can send an enquiry. If I still lived there, I would visit the Records Office and find out for you - unfortunately for you, I now live in Australia.

Good luck - Carole
