Searching by address in census

Hi there,

just read your message. Not sure about the census but if you go on www.historicaldirectories.org you can find street information and if you're lucky you will get house numbers and those who lived in them.

One thing I have found though is that sometimes if the occupants rented the property from a landlord then their names will not show up.

Happy hunting.

This is some info that was posted by David, on how to search census records by addrress, im sure he will not mind if i post it here on his behalf. and i ackowledge it is his work not mine I bookmarked this for my own reference, it does work but as David stated it is a bit long winded, but i have found lots, and once you get the hang of it it gets easier.

So is the 1881 census the only one that is searchable by address?

Well no it isn't, they all are if you have the patience. Here is how you can do it:

1) On Ancestry click on the census year that you are interested in.

2) Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see 'Please choose a county'. Click on the appropriate county.

3) On the next page click on the civil parish that you are interested in and click that.

4) On the next page you will see a list of districts (The larger the place the more districts there will be).

5) By the side of each district you will see, 'View description of enumeration district'

6) As you click on each of those in turn you will be presented with a sheet containing details of the roads, streets, buildings which are covered in that district.

7) Once you have discovered which district covers the place that you are interested in go back and click on that district number.

8) Check each sheet until you discover the place/address you are looking for.

Many returns only have folio numbers rather than house numbers but with a bit of effort it is usually possible to identify what the house number was.

It can be a long winded process but it can be rewarding.

Hi David,

I subscribe to Find My Past and you can do an address search on 1841....1861....1871....1891 with 1851 and 1901 coming soon.

Hi Jennifer,

I believe you can search on the Census via an address.

I searched the 1901 Census by address for my great grandfathers family as the two surnames I had for them (Kesselman & Cassonman) wasn't bringing up anything and no matter how many ways and letters I changed I couldn't find them. I then thought about clicking on the address search button - I had a copy of a document of my great grandfathers from when he enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment & it had his address - so I put in that address and found them - under the name Casterman!
