Thank you very much. I think that it sometimes becomes confusing when there are discrepancies in the spelling of names.
I will certainly follow on Frank Gedney.
Thank you.

On the 1871 UK census he's a fisherman aboard the vessel "Adelaide". It says he was born 1855, Virginia, South America. (Of course we all know Virginia is in North America)

In 1881 he's married to Harriet with 3 kiddies. he's a fisherman, 3rd hand, born 1855 New York. 3 older children are living with them, listed as sisters-in-law. Their surname is Gawthorpe so evidently that was Harriet's surname.

Try checking US census records for his parents and siblings.

if you go into a Mormon church - there are plenty around - they may be able to help you further as their records are pretty good and they have more information than they put on their website apparently

Hello. Can anyone give me some tips on how to research ancestors overseas, more specifically the USA? My great great grandfather was born in New York in 1855 but that is all I know. I would like to trace my tree back further but do not know where to go from here. Please help!!!
I got "Francis Godney's" birthplace from the Mormon's website but the only information available was the year and place of birth; 1855, New York. What can I do to get more information to be able to trace my tree back even further?
