Must have been the site I was looking at since the transcription had Ellen.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Yes Lesley they were.

Stadhaugh Street,

Thanks for that. I was trying to view then original page but I've been having problems viewing. Of course these means I'm using up my credits every time I try, so I've contacted find my past about it.

Yes, most definitely, the 6 yr. old is Eliza. That's why I never use the transcribed version, always go to the original.
Actually just noticed she's Eliza on the transcribed version.

Is this family living in Laxfield, Suffolk in 1861? If so, the 6-year old Ellen is actually Eliza.

Not necessarily - the husband might well have "adopted" them. That's what happened with my two Hannahs - threw me for a while too!

If you can find their marriage cert that should help.

That doesn't really work, here is the census...

HALL, Charles Head Married 31 1830
HALL, Eliza Wife Married 32 1829
HALL, Charles Son 09 1852
HALL, George Son 08 1853
HALL, Ellen Daughter 06 1855
HALL, Ellen Daughter 05 1856
HALL, John Son 01 1860

Then again I guess it could but wouldn't her kids have a different surname.

I've got an ancestor with two sons called Thomas but by different husbands and both sons alive at the same time.

It's common to find a family using the same name repeatedly if a child died but I think calling two by the same name who both lived seems lacking in imagination!

This seems odd to us but the past is sometimes strange and our ancestors had some odd ideas.

I have seen a similar one to the one that Jill mentioned, a second marriage of the parents and they each had a child with the same name.

Well I have a family with an Eliza and an Elizabeth and I think some children were occasionally given the same name.

However, it would be worth investigating to see if the parents had been married before. On a friend's tree that I was researching once we came across two Hannahs in one family - of a similar age - it turned out that they were step-sisters as both parents had married before.

I have found a 1861 census for my family and there are two children with the name Ellen though the age is about a year apart.

I was wondering if the enumorator may have got confused and put the same child down twice or if they may have acually had two children with the same name.

Does anyone have any ideas? Both were born in the 1850's so both are alive.
