I know that both of my Great Grandfathers James Thomas, born C1883 in Tredegar Gwent and William Burgess, born 1875, location not yet known but think Yorkshire, served in the Army. How do I go about finding out which units and what their Miitary records were?

My G Grandad Burgess used to tell tales about the Siege of Mafeking (Boer War 1898-1901) but I'm not sure if he was there or if he was gloryifying the picture of the event he had over his mantle piece! I think he was a Sgt on discharge, both lived in Leeds, Yorkshire in the early 1900's.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dear Grumpy and Mick in the Sticks

Fantastic - I hadn't expected a reply so quickly.

My Great Grandfather Burgess's middle name was indeed Robert (I have the birth certificate) so it could well be him and I may pop over to York next weekend but I will ring first to check what I wil need.

Thanks guys, your help is much appreciated.

Kind regards
Kathy
