One can view the reports of the Registrar General at:
http://www.histpop.org/ohpr/servlet/Browse?path=Browse/Registrar%20General%20(by%20date)/1881-1890&active=yes&treestate=contract&titlepos=0

A study was made of the last 2 quarters of 1841, and the illegitimacy rate was 6.4%. Put another way, that's an average of more than one per census page.

Well, yes it could be correct but have you looked for other possible marriages?

There is also a Thomas Sheldon who marries Elizabeth Timmings, 25 JUL 1825 Sedgley, Stafford

Have you tried to find the family on the census returns? The ages of the children might help determine when the parents were married.

The trick is to try and corroborate your findings with independent information, wherever you can.

Hello! I've just descovered that I can use familysearch.org to look up relatives once the census's run out! I am a little puzzled to have discovered a christening may have happened before the parents were married? Surely this wouldn't have happened? I was searching for the birth of a DAVID SHELDON born c1831 Staffordshire and discovered a christening in Tipton, Staffs on 31 OCT 1830. Parents were listed as Thomas Sheldon and Elizabeth. I then discover a wedding between a Thomas Sheldon and an Elizabeth Tibbetts on 29 NOV 1830 at ST Thomas, Dudley, Worcestershire. As this is the fist time I have used this site, I was wondering whether or not I was using it right. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Naomi.
