Since the events of interest were before statutory registration, you'll need to check church records. For Harwich, these will be in the Essex county records office:
http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCWebsite/dis/gui.jsp?channelOid=13813&guideOid=14788

If that's not very accessible, then probably the easiest route is to rent films thru the LDS to view at one of their FHCs. You can locate one near you by searching in the centre column at:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
Next, in blue bar at top, go to library - library catalogue - place search - Harwich (part of) Essex - church records
There's 4 entries - 2 non-conformist & two C of E. The 2 C of E aren't really supposed to be different, since the BTs are supposed to be an exact copy of the parish registers which the church made for back-up purposes. Anyway, take your pick, and also check out the "view film notes" button - this will give you the film # you want to rent. E.g.,

Title Parish registers for Harwich, 1559-1984

Hi Blossom

They were mis-transcribed, in one the surname was spelt Mayer and the other it was spelt Mayes.

Hoping somebody could give me a bit of advice. Ive been researching my granmother's side of my family tree and have now hit a brick wall, hoping somebody may be able to suggest where to go next.
My 4 x gt grandparents were Joseph Mayor born abt 1803 Sussex his wife was Hannah ? born abt 1801 Essex. They had three sons

John Henry abt 1833
Samuel 1836
Thomas 1840

Ive found them in the 1841 and 1851 census also have Samuel and John with there families from 1861 onwards. My problem is trying to find a marriage for Joseph and Hannah and also birth records for the three sons (all born Harwick, Essex).
Joseph was a Master Mariner and would also like to trace him in any records related to any ships he sailed on etc.

Any advice would be appreciated as im at a loss as to where to go from here.
