Just like the UK, where there's no central registery and each country maintains its own BMD registers under its own rules, so in Canada, each province maintains its own BMD registers under its own rules. So you'll need to know which province. A useful gateway is:

To locate the death of one of my other halves relatives who died in Canada in the 1970's?
