Thank you everyone. The ancestor is George Wardell born c1806 in Middlesex and died May 1860 in Lambeth, Surrey. As the Will would have been proved after 1858 I think, if there is one, it would be held at the Probate Offices in York so I'm sending off for them to do a 4yr search from 1860.

I have a feeling I'm going to have to trawl through all the Middlesex baptisms of the Wardell's between 1805 and 1810 at the LMA. Does anybody know if they are indexed in some way or am i going to have to trawl through absolutely every entry in that time frame looking for the name Wardell in amongst thousands of entries (groan)? Without a Father's name I could end up with any number of possibilities at the end of it and will then have the joyous job of working out which one is mine.

Hi Linda,

Try finding the Banns of his marriage, it may lead you to his place of birth or at least to the Parish he was from when he married.

If he married by Licence then possibly that may have survived, I was lucky enough to find one from 1811.

Good luck.

Linda,

A large proportion of the Middlesex baptisms are not online yet, so it would mean a trip to the LMA and a (very) long trawl through probably thousands of reels of film. Good Luck! It may be worth trying all other avenues first.

Outlines of wills are in index books at the Probate Office in Holborn. If you find an entry, you can then purchase a copy of the will for £5, unless it has gone up since November.

Hi Linda.

You have not given his surname.

It is possible that the LMA would have some licensing records.

Thanks Gwyn. The marriage entry shows two witnesses but neither appear related to my George. Found them on the 1841 and 1851 census but were alone as a family. George died in 1860 and as the landlord of a pub i wonder if he had a will and if there may be some info in there that could be useful. Any ideas where i get copies of wills?

The first son is also George so maybe looking for baptisms with a George as the father either first or middle name or something may not be a bad idea. Now all i have to do is trawl through all the Middlesex baptisms! Not a task I'm looking forward to!!

Maybe a family member was witness to the marriage....either a sibling or father perhaps?....although they won't be shown as such.
This might help when looking for a baptism.
Alternatively
Have you found the couple in each census? Did they have his parents with them at any time?

Although not reliable, ..have you tried searching for a baptism where the father has the same name as the 1833 groom's first son?
That might give a starting point to work from....?

I'm trying to work out how to look for the baptism of my ancestor around 1806. His marriage entry in 1833 provides no details of the fathers of bride or groom. How do i find a baptism entry in Middlesex around 1806 with no father's details for confirmation i have the right entry? Or am i hoping for too much from too little? I'm going slowly crazy with this person.

Thanks

Linda
