hi my great great grandfather is THOMAS GEARIN now the family is spelt GEERING born 1866, I know this from his marriage cert, there is a blank where father is.
He was brought up in the poor house in Warrington on the 1871 census.

With no birth cert, no fathers name to go, any suggestions how I can find out who he was, who his parents may have been...why I am called geering Cany anyone help I am lost THANKS

for reference, He is their in 1871 with brother Richard.

I dont know when the marriage was but there is a Thomas Gearen born abt 1864 England, who dies in South Australia 1936 on "familysearch.org" and shows a father as Daniel Gearen. Does it fit with anything?

I have looked for a birth and cannot find one with the info from the census,
I think the transcription of the surname is wrong on the census but cannot tell what it should be, try asking for another opinion on the image for the 1871 census

thanks ozibird, think you may have uncovered something, there rather shocked about Richard being a lunatic in 1901.
Because as far as Iknow he died in 1901 as did his little son frank.

I thought the workhouses were for children, not adults can they be prisons too

Workhouses were very much for adults. Sometimes they were used for hospitals, asylums, & maternity wards as well as for paupers. Unfortunately many elderly people ended up in them & they weren't nice places to be.

Remember this may not be your Richard.
