Lodger/Boarder why would they change this on censu

Well Ozi,

Thats what I was thinking why bother crossing it out and then adding Boarder as you say it doesn't change the census info any really.

Normally a lodger just rents a room while a boarder gets bed & board.

Unless the person who changed it actually knew if a person was one or the other, I can't fathom it. I wouldn't have thought it made much difference to the statistics of the time.

I think a lodger just slept in the house, but a boarder took their meals with the family. (Seem to remember I read it somewhere.)

On several Scottish census I have there are people listed as Lodger then this is crossed out and Boarder entered, really what would be the differnce between the two? I mean why change it on census form?
