Agnes md. Andrew Newlands in 1836 Paddington (from Pallots). I have 1851 census where they are living in Windsor, Berks which says she was born in Chelsea, M'sex. Birth certs of children give her maiden name of Warnham and have tried variants. Andrew died in 1862 aged only 50 and I can't find her from there.
To add to this I'd be very grateful if anyone can find or knows how I can find where Andrew came from. according to census he was born in 1812 and all he put was Scotland. I have found one Andrew Newlands born 1812 in Bathgate West Lotian but I don't know how to prove if it is him. I live in Australia so can't check parish records myself.
He must have had a strong accent as on the Pallots register he was Andrew Neillings - with a strong Scottish accent that tends to be what Newlands sounds like! Why did I ever start this? - but I am so hooked!
Thank you ahead to anyone who can find anything that might help
Cheers
Sue

Hi Angi,
I don't know. I sent for and have received this document but I don't have any way of proving this is the right family. Andrew is a very common name in Scotland and its early 1800's when not all were registered. I think this could be him as he seems to have been very thorough with paperwork and has ended up as a veterinary surgeon to the queens hunting horses. Maybe he's just continuing from his parents??! How do I prove?

Hi Sue.

To be honest I'm not sure as you can't - I think get the marriage certificate as Andrew was married before 1837.

Are you in a position to go and have a look at the right parish records for the marriage Andrews father name might be in there or the witness's may have been family members.

I'm a bit of a novice to do with Parish records - having just started to look at them myself, someone more experienced may be able to tell you what is held in the parish records.

Sorry I can't be of more help with Andrew. As to Agnes have you considered that before the 1871 census she has re-married? Did Agnes & Andrew have any children you could try and look for in the census records. On freebmd, there is a marriage in 1870 for a Agnes Newlands?

Just a thought - let me know if would like me to look at anything else for you.

The 1870 Lambeth marriage of Agnes Newlands is to Joseph Holland.

On the 1871 census, Joseph is 58 and his wife is 32. Is this Andrew Newlands' widow or their daughter Agnes (aged 12 on the 1851 census)?

Just because you live in Oz, it doesn't mean you don't have access to British Old Parish Registers. I realize that there are places in Oz where it's not real easy (but in most of those places, accessing anything isn't real easy).

Go to: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
Use "Find a Family History Center" in centre col.

Next pick search records - advanced search in blue bar at top, and select the IGI at left

Results for: Andrew Neillings, England, British Isles
Spouse: Agnes Warnham
Exact Spelling: Off
Batch Number: m079035

Click on Andrew, and at bottom you'll see:

So, to see this record, you need to rent FHL BRITISH Film 579636.

[There's an alternate route of getting to the St James OPRs which doesn't rely on having a hit in that OPR.
From the blue bar at top, select library - library catalog, and do a "place search" for paddington - here it's Middx, not Sydney, and it's under "church records".]

Phone the appropriate FHC, re parking, what to bring, and other logistical details. Here, I have to pay up front, and they phone me when the film's in, and I go down to view it, but I'm sure this prepayment could be done via the post (saving a day's drive from Normanton to Mt Isa, if you're really that isolated).

Dear David, Ivy and mgnv,

Thank you so much for all your efforts, your all terrific. I have all the childrens births but had lost William in his apprenticeship and had not found Agnes juniors marriage so thats a bif plus. I will follow up on all the stuff you've sent and maybe along the way Agnes senior will turn up. Thank you for all the info mgnv on how to access parish records. You are right in that they are accessible, I just had no idea how to reach the english ones over the net so I really appreciate your notes. If I can ever find anything for you in Oz please let me know as would be a pleasure,
cheers and many thanks
Sue
