Janet 693215 Report 11 Jan 2009 22:12

If her family have kept it secret, how does she know she is adopted?

My first thoughts are does the short certificate say it is a copy of a record held at the GRO or does it say it is a copy of a record from Bishop Aukland? If it is the former then it is most certainly an adoption. However, if it says the latter, it could be that somehow the record never made it to the GRO (not unheard of.) If this is the case then she needs to apply to Bishop Aukland RO for a copy of her birth certificate.

Hi Steph,

I hope that I am understanding this, but excuse me if I am wrong!

Your friend was adopted, she has a small birth cert in her (adopted )name which she has used all of her life for passports, marriage etc which will not appear in the GRO as she was adopted, a full version will only give you an Adoption Cert with the parents she has now.

She has a Birth Cert as they were issued to adoptive parents in the childs new name, I suppose to save any questions being asked as to why the child had no proper Birth Cert if you were adopted and possibly didn't know of it.

I was adopted and I have two Birth certs, the short one in my adopted name which clearlys says it is a Birth cert, of which my parents also had a full version but it says Adoption Cert on it, and and my original one from the GRO which I ordered to confirm my birth parents.

I wish your friend every success, but she could also try Joan Allan, not seen her about for a while, but she does help a lot of adopted children, her details are on a GR thread.

Kind regards
Amanda

1968 so Free BMD or the IGI won't be of much help.

Just a bit confused about the reference to the Short cert. What is the name on it? Is it the adopted one?

EDIT I've removed my post - I'd assume the date meant 1868, not 1968

Thanks Frances I shall let her know, her small birth cert shows Bishop Auckland so we will contact social services there.

Once again thanks

Thanks Minnie, I checked under mothers maiden name and found nothing, the siblings she has now have all been found where they should be, would social services tell her apdotive parents that she is searching as she does not want them to know as it would upset them as they have kept this secret for over 40 years.

Has she looked under mothers maiden name?
Does she have siblings? are they registered where you'd expect?

if she is trying to find her birth name and knows she is adopted, she's best off asking social services for help.

Sorry no name the person was adopted and she does not appear under the name she was given, I don't mind trawling through databases if it will narrow my search. She only has a small birth cert, will try and get a full size when she comes back from hols to see if that has any info on it we can use, btw she is unable to ask family members as this appears to be an excellent example of a dark secret the family are determined to keep.

Thanks anyway Keith

Not that I am aware of, no.
All sites work on names that I know of.
Do you have any idea of the name? You can search the complete BMD index for that time frame, but only the quarter not specific dates. A VERY long job.

To look for an unamed person by their birthdate of 06.01.68 born in Bishop Auckland on this or any other site?
I know its a longshot but one of you may know.

Many thanks

Steph
