There is (or at least used to be) a site called Ancestral Villages - that might be worth a look.

Thanks Von,

there's some great suggestions there. I am not a member of the FHS for that area but I have a contact who is and he has posted a message asking for any information. I am a member of curious fox though and had completely forgotten about it. I will definitely give that a go.

Hi,

after two years of searching for my elusive g-g-grandparents I decided to take a chance and order a death cert for a lady with the same name but in a totally different area to the one she was in in 1901. I was a bit disheartened when it arrived and although her husband had the same name his occupation was totally different and I was about to disregard it but decided to dig a little further and bingo! I managed to answer two long standing questions in one go. The first was where did they go? Answer they moved to Northumberland and the second was who was the Cole with the confectioners shop in the photo my grandfather used to have? Answer my g-g-grandfather Arthur Cole. I was thrilled but have now come to a dead end again.

Can anyone suggest where to look to find out more information about this shop and possibly how he came to qualify as a master baker? He was an ironstone miner on the 1901 census. I came across an entry in Kellys Trade Directory dated 1910 which named the shop as Arthur Cole & Son. I have emailed the archive centre local to that area but they were unable to find anything directly linked to it. I have also emailed The Association of Master Bakers to enquire if they have any information or if they might be able to tell me how he would have gone about qualifying as a master baker but as yet I have not had a reply from them. I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to where to look next.

Many thanks and happy new year to you all
