'Tis a shame they don't have my great great grandfather but it's a fantastic website nevertheless. Will pass the link on to my niece and nephews not to mention some other kids who'll appreciate it. (Not forgetting their parents and my Mother!)

Hi Naomi,

It probably depends on which County it happened in and what records they hold, I think you should be in luck.

I found my rellie at the Records Office in Chelmsford Essex for 1841, he got 12 months hard labour, if he hadn't been there on the Census it would most likely have never been known.

Kind regards
Amanda

If you know which prison it was there may be records available, either at the National Archives or at the Local Records Office. If you know when and where the crime took place, a search of newspapers would be worthwhile!

Hi. Does anybody know if there are records that can be searched to reveal why somebody went to prison in the late 1800s early 1900s?
