I have an Aunt Dolly whose real name is Agnes. Gosh, what a curve ball? I was looking for Dolly and Dorothy and when I worked out her real name and asked her she swore me to secrecy - lol

I also have a relative who was known as Kitty and started off thinking Kate, Kathryn, Kathleen but, she was registered as Kitty.

I had twin uncles, who I thought would be easy to find. One was called Ray but registered John Raymond and the mother's maiden name was registered as his grandmother's maiden name.

So many are not as straight forward as you would think.

I'm racking my brains to recall "Swallows and Amazons".

Nancy and Peggy were the Amazons, I believe Peggy was Margaret in the real World, but can't think who Nancy was at the moment.

UPDATE: It was Ruth, because "Pirates are Ruthless".

Bear in mind Nancy is a name in its own right, and registration was not compusory untill the 1870's

Does anyone know what Nancy might be short for? I've found a Nancy on 1851 and 1861 censuses but no matching birth record looking several years either side and no possible marriage or death records. Assume this is because officially she was called something else, but the shortened name Nancy was used on census return. Many thanks in advance, Helen
