I meant to add that the reason for this is that FTM automatically updates the data file incrementally each time you add or amend something, which you cant do with a data stick.

When you have finished and closed FTM, then copy the data file back from your hard drive to the stick.

FTM won't work with the data file on a memory stick.

Copy the file from your stick to the hard drive, say in My Documents. It will then open ok from there.

HI david - yes, I have FTM on both pc's.

I understand that a person, say, working at the office, can load work onto a memory stick - take it home, and work on it. The updated info on the memory stick is then transferred back to the office pc next day.....how?

Are the changes showing up on your laptop? If so did you save the updated file on your laptop back to the memory stick?

I have all my family history on Family Tree Maker, and after a total loss of all my information due to PC failure - I purchased an external hard drive. Now, my FTM files are saved automatically, and backed up onto this external drive - no problem there. However, I now want to transfer my FTM files onto a memory stick, so that I can work away from home on my laptop. Thought this would be easy - transferred my files onto a memory stick, and opened on my laptop - got a message stating I could NOT work from a memory stick, and should load my files onto the hard drive of my laptop. Tried this, made several entries, and fould they have not been recorded.

Can some kind member tell my how to transfer a FTM file onto any form of external, or removable memory stick -one that I can work on - in simple terms please....
