The article did not enlighten us to how David ended up in the canal. What a sad way for an 81 year old to end up.

At that age, I can only guess he slipped or fell. I don't like to think of it being anything more sinister.
Perhaps had a heart attack or stroke, although the autopsy says he drowned.
Will never know for sure.

Leonie - how did he end up in the canal? I am intrigued! Glad you got such a positive and helpful response from the archive. Best regards, Julia

I have had a wonderful response from Stoke-on-Trent Archives, giving me details of the newspaper article I was looking for.

It is so helpful to have these facilities available and thanks to Sam of Stoke for recommending this contact.

Thanks for the offer Sam.

I have flicked an email to Stoke on Trent archives and will get back to you once I hear from them.
It may be that I will ask you to look into the article.

If they can't help, I will be visiting eventually but probably not till easter time if you can wait that long. Although I only live 1/2 mile, away, their late night opening is on the only night I have to work!!

It will probably have been reported in the local paper which was/is the Sentinel and Stoke on Trent Archives hold copies on microfilm.

Unfortunately I won't be visiting for a while otherwise I would look it up for you, maybe if you contact them they will do it for you?

I have recently obtained my Ggrandfather's Death Certificate and discovered that he died at the age of 81yrs on 11/11 1934.
David Beddall, Master cooper (retired) of 1 Lower St, Newcastle under Lyme.
Cause of death asphyxia caused by drowning. Dead body found in canal.
Place of death was listed as Chesterton, Staffordshire.
I wonder if anyone can suggest where I would find more information about how this could have happened.
As I am in Oz, I have no chance of visiting local libraries or such.
Thanks
Leonie
