Please can anyone help me with this.

My father was born in the 1930s to a married woman but the husband was not my dad's father.

Sometime before my dad got married in 1958 he changed his surname to his real father's. Does this have to be done officially/legally???? Any advice or help gratefully received.

Name changes were usually published in the London Gazette. Have you looked there? A public declaration is sufficient - my family did it.

The same thing happened for my father

He was born in the 1940s to a married woman but the husband was not my dad's father...

But his mother and his biological father did eventually end up getting married and he was "adopted" by his really father and thats when his surname was changed...

I'm still looking for the adoption record for my dad.....
