In the street

I'm wondering if anyone else has come across in a census the address as in the street.

I ask while I was a kew if this meant that they were homeless but I was told that more than likely there was only one road and that because everyone lived along it then it was put down as 'In the street'.

If anyone has any other idea's I'd love to hear them. Mine was on the 1841 census, is there evidence of this in other census's?

What about those who were actually homeless on the night of the census, where were they listed as living?

There are some very strange descriptions on the census - I've seen people described as 'man in a barn', living behind a hedge and in a ditch!

I wonder if the census were done during the day back then?

But then they'd want to becareful they didn't get the same person more than once.

You can see lots just by going to the census (i'm looking at 1871 at the moment) and just putting 'Man' or 'tramp' in the first name box and nothing else.
Among the numerous 'Man Unknowns', there is a 'Man Slept in Stable Near Him' and even one 'Man With Big Nose'!

Never thought to do that. I got a bit bored with man and woman, so thought I would go up market abit and put in Prince /Princess and wow what an insight !!
My first one was His Imperial Highness the Prince Louis L. Bonaparte age 48 Senator of France.
Then up came Her Majesty Queen Amilie living in Claremont House with her many daughters and sons and their spouses, all Princes or Duchesses etc. and look at the staff they had, and where they where all born. Makes fascinating reading, a dip into their personal lives really. Wonderful stuff. Thanks Sam and Gipsy Joe for getting me into this.
A hint for anyone doing this - look at the address on the census (not original) if it a castle or wealthy area. e.g. windsor, St. James etc. then they are probably real royals. Also look at the number of names on the entry. if it is just 3 names e.g joe bloggs, wife Betty and son The Prince of Wales it´s unlikely to be genuine. A Royal would have numerous staff named on the census.

Well I´m off to get the maid to put the warming pan in my bed.

I'll defiantely be having a lookie look when I get home from work today.

But still has no-one come up with anyone from their family in a strange address on 'In the Street' for that matter.

A couple of years back, I went for a hike to Cheakamus Lake, and in the middle of the forest, abt 5km from the trailhead, there's a sign nailed to a tree which reads:
"Mathew Wayne Cormack was born here, July 20, 1985 Thanks to all at Whistler EMS and Search & Rescue."

Well, it would beat lugging a 30m high Douglas fir around.

So what goes on a birth cert then if you are born outside?
And what about all those babes born in backs of cars on the way to hospital? Not to mention those born in Public Loos...lol
