Thanks Natasha I tried to do a search and found I could put the full name if I went to advanced search, which i did and nothing came up for the Boer war but lots of medal cards for WW1 with the same name as I was after but I thought he might have been a bit old to be serving in WW1 as he would have been nearly 50 by 1914. Anyway it was well worth a look and I now know that I can search for any WW1 enquiries I have!!

Thanks to all, logging off now but ta for help!!

hi tina

this is a long shot but try this

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results-summary.asp?searchType=quicksearch&pagenumber=1&queryType=1&catid=*&query=Sheppard&first_date=19000101&last_date=19491231

there's lots of records under sheppard, can't search by first name unfortunately, but you never know

Good luck

Thanks
all I have to go on is his full name which was Albert edward Sheppard, he was born in 1865 in Wiltshire, I know for a fact he got married in 1899, but as I said his wife was alone in 1901 as he was said to be a soldier in South Africa. By 1911 incidentaly he had become a postman!!
I had a quick look on the National Archives site but nothing on there was searchable but it said that they were digitalising some stuff that would take 3 years to finish from 2008!!
At least I now know that it would have been the Boer War,
Thanks Natasha I will give that a try too.

Oh and this info too:

How to find army records for the South African (Boer) War 1899-1902
(a very brief summary just to get you started)

For those who died:
Search the Index to Natal and South Africa Forces deaths 1899-1902. It is available at the Family Records centre (FRC) in London and The National Archives (TNA) at Kew. The index has been copied onto fiches and can be viewed at many Local Studies' Libraries and County Record Offices.

For Officers' services:
Search the 'Army List' to trace details of an officer's career. Published annually since 1754, you can find partial runs of the list in most large libraries.

For Other ranks:
Search the Medal Rolls at TNA in document class WO100
Most army records are held in TNA - for service in the army see the Soldiers' Document in document class WO97.

Those who served in the Imperial Yeomanry are in class WO128. A publication (available at TNA) is useful here:

'The roll of the Imperial Yeomanry, Scottish Horse and Lovats Scouts, 2nd Boer War 1899-1902' by K J Asplin - it is an 'alphabetical list of 39,800 men of these volunteer forces who enlisted for the 2nd Boer War.'

A selection of records relating to disabled Naval ratings and soldiers who received disability pensions and who served between 1877 and 1914 are in a file PIN71 at TNA. This is searchable using 'The Catalogue' the search engine for TNA records available at http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.asp (http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.asp)

Hi Tina

This would be the boer war yes. It ran from 1889 - 1902.

My great grandfather fought in the boer war too.

I didn't find the info regarding his war history unfortunately, so I'm no use on that front.

Does nothing come up on national archives search online?

Having excitedly found a couple of new leads from looking at the 1911 census one ancestor has "popped up" I have now gone back to try and find him and his wife on the 1901 census to see what they were up to then!!
Unable to find him I find his wife living where I thought she would be with 2 children, and interestingly in the proffesion/occupation column it says
"Living on soldiers pay husband at war in South Africa"
Would this have been the Boer War and if so does anyone know if information about these soldiers is available on line or would I have to go to the Natonal Archives in person????
Just Curious
Can anyone help??
Thanks
Tina
