Problem with birthplace when searching trees

Can anybody help, please? I'm trying to search trees on here for a certain name which is very common in Scotland but not so common in England, so I thought I would narrow it down by putting England in the birthplace, but I'm still getting loads of Scotland matches! If I put something else in, such as London, it seems to work, so does the word England just get ignored for some reason? Anybody know?

Kate.

hi there Kate,
Not really sure, but as peoples trees usually mention where they were born, i.e. London or Lincolnshire or some go even closer like not just a county but a place like Burton Stather, then i don't think England comes up on the searches, unless someone dosen't actually know where they were born. It would help if you had a place of birth. What is it that you are looking for and can anyone help you with a place of birth perhaps. Sometimes i have sent messages to loads of people and have got lucky, sometimes not.
happy hunting

The search results are all based on what the tree owner has entered on this site.

Most people will if unsure about place of birth in England will enter a county, and not the country where as if the person was born in Scotland people would enter that,

If you look at where people get their info eg census's, bmd certs

If a person was unsure about birth place the entry would be NK (Not Known) Yorkshire, You don't see it say NK England

the only tree's that you will see England as place of birth would be on people who emigrated

Thanks, Nutty Bongo. I do know where they were born - Islington, but the problem is that it might not say that on an entry. They could have put the name of a smaller area within Islington, for instance. I tried London in case they had just put that, but I was hoping to get all the England matches together so I could look through them. At one time if you were building your tree on here it did force you to enter a country, so I was hoping I might find a match that way if they had entered England as the country.

The details are rather complicated, but I'm just trying to save money by not buying more credits to view an image on the 1911 census! The transcription for the family says there is a son Florence McCulloch, age 8, born Islington, and a daughter Florence McCulloch age 10 born Tottenham West. There was definitely a daughter Florence age 10 so I'm trying to see if I can figure out what the son's name is supposed to be, but maybe trying to see if anyone on here had him in their tree wasn't the best way of going about it.

Thanks again,
Kate.

I've just tried the same search putting Scotland in the birthplace and it works fine, also Australia, so it really does seem as though it just ignores England! What happens is I get 300 matches if I specify England, but that is the maximum it will give you and it includes all the Scottish ones. If I specify Scotland I get 119 matches which are all Scottish.

Oh well, I've managed to find him on a tree on another site so I now have his name! Thanks.

If anyone is interested, I did a search on his full name and put in birthplace England, and got loads of matches including all the Scottish ones etc, and in the middle of them was one where the birthplace is just England. So there is definitely something in the search software on here that decides to ignore "England" in the search criteria.
