Hi Ann,

As you say, the place name spellings may vary, and many of my relatives have quoted different places of birth.

Try putting in the first name of a married family member, comma for surname, year of birth +/-2, year of marriage +/-2, county of birth instead of town/village, and the first name of the spouse as another family member, then search scroll down the options for the surname or a similar looking mistranscribed surname (eg Twiner for Turner)

If that doesn't work, try looking at nicknames, narrowing it down by expected county of residence, children's first names in the same household, adjusting the birth/marriage dates in case of error, taking out info that might not match, etc - try to keep to the most likely possible appearance of the transcription (unusual first names may be helpful, but only if they have been correctly spelt/transcribed - I have found a Lililian)

All the best

Thanks, Kay and Tree Hunter for your replies.

I have been to look again on Find My Past, and it is now not available to look at!! I think I may be ready for the funny farm. How these people go on, who have 3,000 people on their tree, to find all that information and to back it all up with documentation, I dont know.

Hi Ann,

Yes i have been to kew on tuesday, it took me a lot of look ups to find just one of mine, But got them in the end,

Havent got all of england on there yet, but will be put on over the next few months.

i was putting in the name Pearce for all over and coming up no one of that surname on there. So its just finding the ways of doing it on there like other census, I did find the name Pearce in the end, sadly not the ones i was looking for.

Good luck.

Hi Ann,
I found my grandfather...but not in the county I was expecting him to be in..
He was in Norfolk in 1901...and again during the 20s..but in 1911 he was in Essex...which surprised my mother.

Hi,
As anybody on here looked at this yet? (1911) census. I have looked for 6 members of my family, and, not found one, I know that when these are being put together, that the spelling of some places are not correct, as the writing is so bad. But, if they had someone transcribing them, who knew the areas they were doing, we wouldnt be looking at place names misspelt. Some of my family came from Harpurhey, in Manchester, and they have it as Harpushey. Maybe thats why I cant find anybody.
