LOOKING FOR ANCESTOR IN THE NAVY

I have been told by several of my older relatives that my great uncle was in the navy and there was a photo of him in uniform, sadly know one knows where it is. He was born in 1908, so too young to be in the first world war, but died in 1931 so wouldn't have been in the second world war. Does anyone know where I can find out if he was in the navy?

If you do, you will be able to:

Search and download the service registers of seamen who joined the Royal Navy between 1873 and 1923 on DocumentsOnline. A fee of £3.50 is charged to download a digital copy of a seaman's register.

Thank you I will try that. The people of I spoken to all said it was a Royal Navy uniform, but if I don't find him there I will try the merchant navy.

If he was Royal Navy as opposed to merchant then there is every chance he joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Entrant and possibly trained at HMS Ganges.
If you want me to take a look at the photo and see if I can identify the uniform pm me and I will let you have my e-mail details
