On one of mine the wife said they'd been married 40 years which was definitely a year or two out as the husband's first wife was still alive then!

I expect they may have got a bit muddled with their dates occasionally!

Thanks for that idea Sylvia

I was looking at the trans copy not orig.
It has her married for 18 years and 9 children then this is crossed out in red pen and put as 2 children.
The 9 children would be right, but she married march 1895 which would be 16 years if husband had not died?

Did you look on the census image to see if it said how many children had been born to bertha?

I don't know whether it would say for anyone other than the wife of the Head, but that may be one way of finding out if it is "your" bertha with her son Thomas

In 1901 census Thomas family were living in southgate middx their were 6 children and head of house George porter birth abt 1871 &wife Bertha.
Thomas was born 1904 after his father had died. He had another sister born 1902 bertha ivy.

In the 1911 census I have found a family living with a couple.
porter bertha widow 35
porter Ivy niece 8
porter Thomas 6
Brindley frank head
Brindley Emily wife the relationship to head says sister but could they mean wifes sister as Bertha maiden name was wood.

I have found Bertha (birth abt 1875 )in the 1881 census with her family but no Emily .They were living in tottenham
I couldnt find them in 1891.

The only thing is if they are the right family in 1911 where are Bertha other children. Some would have left home but would you have left at twelve (the age of her youngest)

Any ideas!

Thanks for your time Sue
