i've downloaded the family historian free 30 day trial and it looks quite good.
Thanks to you all for taking the time to reply and for the advice you have given.

I paid £20 for an upgrade to FTM 2009. Perhaps it is me, but so far I hate it and have gone back to FTM 2005. I'll have a look at Family Historian.

If you really do need new software, then go with Family Historian, the Which Best Buy. I find it excellent and it will do all you want to do.

You don't need new software to add these sort of details - FTM 2005 has all you need with its Facts options.

Basically what you need to create facts for the main items of information that want to record. I use two Facts for the Census

Occupation, enter the census date in the date field and the Details in the Narrative and Census Address, again with the date and address details.

You can create as many new Facts (assuming there isn't one in the default list) as you wish if there are other details you wish to record on a regular basis

Ad-hoc information is simply added in the general notes field.

There is little point in upgrading your version of FTM to 2006 as you wouldn't gain much more functionality.

FTM 2009 is a completely different program, however. The first version (2008) was not to everyone's likings but I gather that the 2009 upgrade has resolved a lot of the original problems and missing functionality.

My husband and I are looking to buy a new software programme. Ideally we would like one where there is a section to add in details of each census, ie you can add where they were living, who they were living with, etc.
We have been using FTM 2005 but wanted to get something newer. If anyone has any recommendations then we'de be very grateful.
