Google shows it was there in 1851 too.
If you 'walk the streets' of the census.as the enumerator did, perhaps there will be a landmark, eg pub, school cottage etc to help determine where it is.
I got as far as Bushey Heath, but you might reconise the area better.

Here it is in 1881, from:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
It's easy to click thru successive households at this site.

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
William LEACH Head M Male 36 Kempston, Bedford, England Blacksmith
Hannah LEACH Wife M Female 33 Brampton, Devon, England
George LEACH Son U Male 4 Bushey Heath, Hertford, England Scholar
Elizabeth E. LEACH Daur U Female 1 Bushey Heath, Hertford, England

Source Information:
Dwelling Bushey Heath Bellevue Lane For Frying Pan Alley
Census Place Bushey, Hertford, England
Family History Library Film 1341348
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 1434 / 93
Page Number 14

One can find Belle Vue Lane at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ The URL is:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=514790&y=194330&z=110&sv=belle+vue+lane&st=6&tl=Map+of+Belle+Vue+Lane,+Bushey+Heath,+Bushey,+WD23&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf

One can grab the OS coordinates 514790, 194330 embedded in the URL and use these to search at:
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
However, although the (unnamed) Bellevue Lane appears on the map, I can't see where the alley would be (in any year).

Hi mgnv,

Looking at the image, the enumerator's handwriting is not the best. I wonder if he has written "Belle View Lane" OR "Frying Pan Alley" - I have come across street names/pubs etc with two names, often one idealistic and one derogatory!

Alternatively, the Google satellite shows a short terrace of houses fronting the main road, and a road behind these that runs off Belle Vue Lane - I wonder if the alley gave access to households living in the back of the terrace?

As you say, there is no sign of any separate row of houses, and there are supposed to be four households along the alley.

I regret to say I never switched sites to check the image before. I think the LDS transcription is correct, but I agree, it's not easy - the writing is pretty splotchy. It is spelled Bellevue on the next two pages - it's not clear if it's one word or two though (on any page).

Thanks mgnv and Ivy looks like you have narrowed it down to off Bellevue Lane. Will still have a visit to Bushey museum.
