MargaretManson .... yes it is William Ryan and his parents were born in Ireland.

Ericthered ... yes I was wondering if perhaps he could have got married in
America!

Thank you all for helping me with this .....

Ericthered

Ericthered Report 18 Jan 2009 11:27

IF he went to the States..................maybe he married over there????????

Ericthered

Ericthered Report 17 Jan 2009 23:11

The number of years they have supposedly been married may be just to fit in with the age of the eldest child. So be sceptical!

Two families I have looked at show untrue figures........one couple stated in 1911 that they had been married for 7 years............... I have the cert dated 1913!!!!!!

Have you seen this?..... may be a complete red herring, and nothing to do with your family, but is same area as you know a child was born.

Are you sure he's the same one that's on the American census? The one I'm looking at in Philadelphia is just William Ryan, no middle name. He was born 1861, England and his parents were both born Ireland.

Gwyn ........ on 1901 census they were in Islington with 5 of their children.
Trevor .... I had a feeling they might not have got married ... The first child
that I know about at moment was born 1888.

Thanks for all your replies to my query.

Hayley, Yes they are described as married couple. I found them on 1891 census RG12/139 page 56 folio 30 at 10 Winscombe Street, Pancras, with 2 children.
I recently found William Joseph Ryan (b: 1860 Devon) on 1881 census in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA with his parents and siblings. They had emmigrated in 1870. I just do not know when William came back to U.K.
At the moment I know he had a son born about 1888 in Islington, Uk.

Where are they in 1901?

Maybe Ann had been married before and so wouldn't be COLE when she married William ?

Thank you for your quick reply kempinawoolie hat. The children died before 1911.

If they say they've been married 28 years best place to start is work backwards. Are they on 191, or 1891 census? If so are they described as a married couple?

On 1911 does it just show they are married - doesn't necessarily mean to each other ... she could be married to his brother or anything.

Post some details of where they were living in 1911 & people may help you search earlier census

If the choldren are still born its hard to find out those details BUT there is a way ....for close rellies to find these details but I dont know the web site you need

Many of these people didnt marry but say there were.......

If the children where born after 1912 you may find them by matching MMN

If they died after birth you may find them on other census

Thats about as much as I can help other people here are better at this than me and may give you more tips

I recently looked at 1911 census and it stated that my William Joseph Ryan and Ann Ryan (nee Cole) had been married 28 years but I cannot find any marriage for them. Also I found out that they had 10 children! It says 6 living and 4 died. This was a surprise because I only knew about 2 of them ..... I have found out about the other 4 but how do I find out about the 4 that died?
