Yes Ivy, i thought it pretty cruel. i suppose drowning your sorrows was a way to atleast escape temporarily, and i noticed the first two offences were just a few days apart. yes he went on to have another two children and he died in 1946. I certainly can't blame him for wanting to find a way out! must have been awful enough as it was, without field punishment number one!

yes i think it probably was confined to Barracks. as you say it does seem quite a step up from there to field punishment.

Hi Leanne,

I think cb might be confined to barracks - a bit of a jump from that to FP no1. 21 days sounds appalling - and alcohol probably the only available painkiller - he has my sympathy. Glad to see he made it through to discharge in 1919.

Will see if I can finish the transcript before turning in

Second on page:

(i) Irregular conduct, i.e. bringing intoxicants into workshops contrary to order!

(It is hard to make out because most of the strokes below the line seem to have faded out more than the rest of the writing.....)

Thank you very much Ivy, thats v helpful. i haven't read it but i will put it on my list. sounds like he was caught drunk a few times- doesn't suprise me to be honest! i have no idea about c.b either.

thanks again,

First on page:

Rouen 4th June 1915,

Absent from 1.25 pm (...?) until found in camp 1.40pm

Have you read the Michael Morpurgo book Private Peaceful? It sounded as if it was quite usual to frighten the others by making an example of very minor matters - which might then escalate.

I can't for now think what c b might mean.

sorry have just looked on google (which i should have done before posting) and found what number one field punishment is (being tied to a fixed object for up to three hours a day, sometimes in range of enemy fire)

sorry, i should have thought to google that first. i would still appreciate if someone could look at the service record for me.

Thanks,
Leanne.

hi all

i have found a service record for my Albert Fagan b. devon c.1885, and on page 7 of the record is a number of offences commited! i can read the bottom one, "drunk whilst nightwatchman". i was wondering if somebody could have a look at the others for me please as i cannot seem to make them out.

Also the punishments are things like 5days c.b or 21days no 1 field punishment. i wondered if someone could shed some light on what these meant.

thank you for taking the time to read this,
Leanne.x
