A person very important to me died in a car accident two weeks ago. She was 47. I hadn't known her for long but she was fascinated by my hobby of researching family history and wanted me to help her with her own family. I know her mother was Scottish and there were lots of family mysteries she wanted to know about.

She recently became a grandma for the first time, and I had this idea of putting together a family history for the child, at least of her grandma's side.

So, I have found her birth in Northumberland, but I cannot get the certificate from GRO without full details of her parents. I am not about to badger the bereaved family for this information, so has anyone any ideas what I can do?

I was just trying to do something for the family, that I know she wanted me to do.

do you think she is buried near her parents, if so, you will have their names

have you seen an obituary in the newspaper? That might say "daughter of ...."

Did they have a church service for her? Was there an order of service given out? That might also have her parents' names on it.

Hi Margaret,

So sorry to hear your news, bless her and RIP but still so young.

I got my own birth cert (I was adopted) from the GRO from 1959 with no problem, but I obviously had my DOB.

Maybe the local Records Office in Northumberland will be more helpful to you.

Kind regards
Amanda

Thats a lovely thing to do Margaret, this may sound silly but did your friend register on here at all? do you have the names or even numbers of any of her siblings or cousins? Good luck x x

Did you know where this lady worked or socialised?....... work colleagues often know peoples birthdays, and details about their families....so sad to die so young, thats my age, and it struck a chord with me, when I read your thread.

good luck with it all, and i think its a lovely gesture.

I'm not familiar with the new rules, but do the same rules apply for people who are known to be dead?

Dear all, she was born Janice Williamson 23 July 1961 in Nortumberland South, ref Q3 1b/490, daughter of somebody Williamson and somebody Campbell.

I really don't know any more. She never married, so there is no marriage certificate to get.

She was cremated today, so no burial. Good idea though to search Williamsons in the local cemetery. Probably thousands of them! And the service at the crem, I have its address.

Good idea also to search the local newspaper for an obituary, Newcastle is a big place though, and she didn't die there, and hadn't lived there for years.

I know she had a brother Wayne who died. No idea of his age at birth or death.

Yep I know who she worked with, but they have no info they can give me (data protection act), don't know if all these rules apply if the person is dead, GRO doesn't ask that.

Thanks all, I will keep trying.

Margaret
its a lovely thought doing a tree for her grandchild. Perhaps when the family has had time to grieve you can say what you are doing and ask for any other information

Margaret, I think I have found the names you are looking for.
I have sent you the details in a personal message.

Many thanks to everyone, I now have her parents' marriage info and I thought to google Newcastle newspapers and there is an obituary notice telling me her mother's name was Lillian and she had a brother Wayne who died in 2000 whose birth I have also found and whose mother's maiden name is Campbell.

I'll get there!
