This may seem like a really silly question but I'm very new to all this... Am I right in thinking if I go in person to the records office rather than searching online I can still only see the BMD indexes and not the detailed information relating to a B, M or D? What other information might I get by going to a records office?

Hi
Visiting the local records office is addictive.
Obviously you need to go to the one, local to your family, the documents you can view, do give more details than just BMD, marriage details Include fathers name and occupation, age and status, occupation oft those marrying and in some case also name of witnesses.
Baptism datails will give parents names and occupation.
There is less information on death details however sometimes there is a small comment.
There are also census detals and no end of local social history resources.
Local newspapers are always a great source of information too.
If you really are interested in your family history I would recommend going.

Bubblebelle, What records office have you visited?

I have never been able to see marriage details at records office, other than those on parish records. your post would suggest that you can see all the info on marriage cert.

Do you meen the info on the parish records?

The info on parish records for marriages after 1837 is exactly the same as you would find on a certificate.

you are correct, you do not see the actual certificate, but for a lot of parish records of the19 century on microfiche, I have found the information I have cited, related to marriages.
Information that has been catalogued tends to be less informative. I suppose that our local library has an intigrated archive and records office so this may add to the availability . .Although they advise you to try to find the information within other resources, our local office will allow you to view the original church records ,wills etc. I find it a fantastic resource, in helping others, sadly none of my family ancestors come from around here.
I live in Devon and this is my experience of our local resource
