Check out FreeBMD first - it's easy to use and free.

If you find her in there make a note of the Year, the Quarter, the reference numbers (Volume and Page) as you would need this info to order the cert.

You could also try looking for her marriage cert to your grandfather as that would give her father's name as well. (Just in case there are a couple of likely birth certs and you're not sure which one is yours)

i don't subscribe to those but i do know that she was born in1888.

Her birth cert should show both parents' names.

Order it from the GRO - £7 online, a bit more if ordered by phone or fax.

You might find her details on FreeBMD - goes up to about 1925-30ish. If you can't find it and you know (roughly at least) when she was born then you need to search through the full listings on Ancestry or Findmypast. If you don't subscribe to one of the sites then come back and ask and someone will find you the quarter and ref nos you will need to order the cert.

i have been trying to find out the names of my grandmothers(nora may smith) parents how would i go about it i've been at a dead end for weeks.
