Hi there can anyone help me, as to why my father would have two service records against his name? One service number when he joined and a 2nd one several years later. He seems to have two sets of records.

Could you give more details?

soldiers moved from one regiment to another for several reason's
sometimes it was just to make up the numbers in another regiment when they had suffered heavy losses and others it may be because he had a certain skill that was requires in another unit.
