Is it possible to find out if someone is divorced?

Hi
For divorces between 1858 and 1927 nearly all the paperwork has survived and its stored at the national archives. You can search online at the National archives website in the J77 range, its indexed by name. If you do find what you are looking for at the NA then you can order and pay online and copies of the paperwork will sent in the post to you.

To search the national archives go to

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

click on tab called search the archives, click on catalogue. Click on search the catalogue, in the dept series code box type J77 and put the surname you are looking for in the word or phrase box. Use the date range to narrow down your results.

If you apply via the Court service in Holborn then you will only receive the decree absolute and maybe the NISI, these papers contain no real information and as from October last year a ten year search went up to £40!!

you can do 10 year searches at the family division, they are expensive and i think that it is now £40 (previously £25)
