Will there be a death certificate

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

A Damer Leslie Allen died on 18 April 1912 whilst attempting to be the first person to fly from England to Ireland.
He never made it to Ireland and was last seen flying over Holyhead.
Would there be a death certificate for him? I have looked but I can not see one.

Possibly depends if a body was found. If not then they may not have isued a death certificate.

As far as I know his body was never found.
Thanks for your help

Hi,

just a thought but have you tried looking for a death registration seven years after the date he went missing? I believe a person can be declared dead seven years after they are last seen. I don't know if a death cert is issued though. I assume it would be though to prove to insurance companies etc that the person is presumed dead.

Worth a try perhaps?

Try Coronial records - there was sure to have been a high profile inquest.

Thought he might have an Irish d.cert, but the only entry in the GRO(I) index is his birth:

Name: Damer Leslie Allen
Registration district: Limerick
Record type: BIRTHS
Registration date - quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1878
Estimated birth year:

Karen in the desert Report 26 Jan 2009 11:14

Ref: the seven years later, missing presumed dead business. The issuing of a death cert is a bit of a grey area.

Having a similar situation in my own family where grandad literally disappeared off the face of the earth, I had a long chat with a very helpful person at the GRO. I explained that my grandma had to wait 7 yrs to have the legalities dealt with, during which time notices were placed in the newspaper etc, before she was free to re-marry. On her new marriage cert her status is widow. But, the GRO assured me, there would have been no death cert issued for him as there was no body. And in this case, he could well turn up 20 yrs later and then die, and what does that mean? That the same person has 2 death certs issued, 20+ yrs apart?
There must be good reason, beyond all doubt, that theperson IS believed to be dead before a death cert is issued. Whatever that term means....
In your case, I think it might be worth a call to the GRO.

If you wrote to the GRO(I) in Dublin, and gave them the info:

Name: Damer Leslie Allen
Registration district: Limerick
Record type: BIRTHS
Registration date - quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1878
Volume: 5
Page: 449

that will enable them to locate the birth record.

Note this parallels the info needed for a 7GBP b.cert from the GRO in Southport. E.g.,

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Sep 1916
Heath Edward R G Pantony Thanet 2a 1927

The other info I don't know. Some, at least, must relate to the filmed copy of the index from which the info was extracted:
Film number: 101055
Digital GS number: 4193456
Image number: 00009
Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958

I've never bought an Irish cert - all my mob were in England by 1864. I note you don't have to buy a b.cert for Euros 10 - you can buy an uncertified photocopy of the register entry for E 6. Also, you can pay by credit card. See:

There is an article in the Times about it. His death was apparently "sworn" in 1912. PM me if you would like a copy of it.
