Who married who?

I have found possible marriages for my rellie on FreeBMD, trouble is each has a possibility of two grooms. Is there a way to find out of the two males who married who thus giving me a choice of three marriages rather than six or have I got to order all the marriage certs. until the correct one turns up.

Thanks.

Depending when it happened you could look in the next available census to see if you can spot them - if you know a birthplace, age etc you might be able to narrow it down that way. This doesn't always work but sometimes it does.

Hi Linda - if you look for each of the grooms in the next available census, always assuming your rellie does not share the same Christian name as the other brides, you should be able to work out which is "yours".

Thanks for your reply Jill & Victoria, it had crossed my mind to try the census but there were so many Elizabeth's and if I go for the husbands name I don't know his DOB so once again throws up so many.

Did she have children? Although if you're not sure who she married that may seem a daft question.

If you know her age and place of birth it would be worth a try. Also consider tracking her parents as far forward as possible - one of them might be staying with her in a later census. Also try tracking her siblings - surprising how often they shared houses/lived next door to each other.

Jill I'm not sure if I'm going quicker with my search or my brains (or lack of them),
I'm looking for Elizabeth Mary Arnold born 16.04.1844 Bishopsgate.
I have her aged six on the 1851 Census with father John 1801 and mother Mary Ann 1805c. By the 1861 Census John & Mary Ann only have the younger brother Charles at home but Elizabeth would have only been 16 and I can't find anything for her. She was sometimes known as Betsey, has anyone any ideas please.

Have you checked deaths for her?

She may have gone into service and the person completing the census form has guessed at her age?

Sue, I have found her on 1851 living at home with mum, dad and younger brother. 1861 is where she vanishes. I can't find a death either.

You don't need to order all the marriage certs until the correct one arrives,

Just order the cert without giving the grooms details and give her father's name as a reference check

What is the index quarter & district? Maybe we can look for the possible grooms.
