I looked up a possible relative on the 1861 census and his occupation was listed a 'striker'

What was a striker?

on another thread elsewhere it says either a blacksmiths helper or a person who harpooned whales :S

also backed up elsewhere

Striker / Stryker 1) Blacksmith's assistant 2) Harpoon man on a whaler
